Spring has sprung and here come the boats! It is once again time to see and feel the thrill that mesmerizes onlookers with delight. Smokin’ the Sound and Smokin’ the Lake are back and ready to bring you a springtime extravaganza that has speed, action and heart stopping twists and turns at every event. With Deer Island as a beautiful backdrop for the 7 mile course the excitement is sure to please. This is like NASCAR on the water!
Smokinthesound.com and 1-888-808-1188 can give you all the information you’ll need to witness some of the most spectacular races and events that you’ll ever see here on the coast. Director Woody Bailey and his staff and volunteers have put together an 11 day event packed with all the food, fun and partying that you can hold. April 26th is the kick off date for Smokin’ the Sound. Boat teams from all over the country will converge on South Mississippi to race for prizes and bragging rights as they light up the Mississippi Sound with speed and engine roar. You can meet the race teams Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Coast bar.
Race Village just north of the Isle Casino and Hwy 90 will open April 26th at 10 a.m. and will allow the public to view the boats that are entered in the races. When you see some of the engines that these boats carry, you won’t be surprised when you see them traveling at 150 MPH on the Sound during a race. On Friday the 27th, you can again meet the race teams at the Hard Rock Casino Center Bar between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday you will see the local boaters compete in the Poker Run along the coast. There will be P-1 racing, qualifying and testing by all OSS classes. A Kilo race, a new addition this year, will be run along the main course in front of Deer Island on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can view all the activities from Beau Rivage, Hard Rock, the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor or the Isle Casino. VIP viewing areas are located at the Schooner Pier and Hard Rock pool deck.
Packages are being offered for $250, $500 and $1000 but you can certainly purchase tickets or wristbands for as little as $5 and up to $25. Places that have the wristbands are Bancorp South Gulfport, Peoples Bank Biloxi and the Smokin’ the Sound office. You may wait and purchase tickets at the gate if you prefer.
To advertise in the event program you can call The Ad Group at 228-388-9830. If you would like to book a room at one of the local hotels you can go through MS Gulf Coast Hotel Reservations and receive a FREE one-day pass to Race Village! Call 1-888-388=1006 for reservations.
There will be 2 heats in the P-1 class races on Saturday at 12 p.m. Sunday the 29th is race day with the gates opening at 10 a.m. and 3 races taking place. If you can’t make it out to watch the speed demons first hand, you can tune in to 104.9 FM for a play-by-play account of the events. There will be at least 3 races per day so you can work the events around your schedule.
Smokin’ the Lake takes place from May 4th thru the 6th on Gulfport Lake just behind The Dock Restaurant. On Race Day Saturday, you’ll see Pro Stock, Performance Bass & Ski, Super Stock and Lake Racers as well as many other types of boats compete for the grand prize in each category. The Dock Race Village opens at 6 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
All events and races are sanctioned by the America Power Boat Association/Offshore Super Series based in Detroit, Michigan. The APBA regulates everything in the boat racing field from remote controlled boats to offshore power boats. Staff from all over the country will be in South Mississippi to oversee the races. The impact on the coastal economy is great every year with this event. Proceeds for 2012 will benefit the Seafood and Maritime Industry Museum.
Volunteers are still needed for these events. Who knows, maybe you can attend as a volunteer, help out your community and be closer to the action than you ever thought possible! Call Woody Bailey and his staff at 228-594-3442 to volunteer or obtain tickets. The office is located at 1907 Pass Road, Suite A in Biloxi. These are the same folks who bring you Crusin’ the Coast in the fall so show your support by attending or volunteering when and where you can.
