South Coast Paddling Company

By: Nancy Baker Faul
Picture yourself in a world where solitude reigns supreme and wildlife surrounds you day and night. Great Blue Heron sit on a grassy knoll and carefully observe a 6 foot alligator, who slips quietly into the briny water. You can experience these things and much more by contacting South Coast Paddling Company in Ocean Springs and book your own Coast adventure!  Located at 2335 Government Street, in an unmistakable lime green and purple building.
Melissa Johnson, General Manager said, “We specialize in taking our paddling guests on kayak adventures that promise relaxation and contact with ecosystems and creatures of the Gulf Coast. Guests can choose to kayak to Deer Island, Horn Island or any number of rivers and creeks on the Coast. Travel alone or with a guide, you will see parts of Mississippi that still remain largely untouched by man. It’s like a vacation right in your own backyard.”
Complete instructions are given for guests that choose to paddle without a guide. Kayaks are delivered to your chosen site and picked up later at debarkation. Shuttle service is available to and from the site and all equipment is provided. For those who would like a romantic touch during their paddling experience, SCPC can also provide a picnic or gourmet lunch.
Special events run throughout the year and reservations are always accepted.  When you have family or friends visit from out of town, a kayak trip would be a very unusual and special way to spend the day together. This unique experience will make lasting memories for years to come. Build your own package to suit your specific adventurous spirit or try a pre-planned package deal. You can choose a two hour trip or make it a full day of fun!
If you are ready for a change from the usual dinner and a  movie date, there is an alternative. The most intriguing experience is what SCPC calls a “Full Moon Paddle.”  The next full moon excursion  is scheduled for August 24th (weather permitting), you can sign up now. Old Fort Bayou is the setting and the fee is only $30 per person. If you have your own canoe or kayak,  you can bring it and join the group for a very small, discounted price. A 10% discount is always extended to all military and a senior discount may be available for some packages and events.  Kids are welcome but the starting age is 5 years old.  No one under 5 is permitted for safety reasons.
This Fall the SCPC will offer an overnight paddling experience on the Pascagoula River. You can call 228-239-1235 for all the details. A trip is also planned in September that will include paddling and camping on Horn Island.  Food and water are provided on most trips. A professional guide accompanies guests on all over night adventures.
The company is managed by 2 “hands on” partners and 2 business and marketing partners who have an ecological consultant firm. South Coast Paddling opened it’s doors in October of 2009. SCPC issues a newsletter that is available by visiting their web site at http://www.southcoastpaddling.com or by e-mailing Melissa Johnson at Melissa@southcoastpaddling.com. Please note that the office is sometimes closed when the management is accompanying guests on trips. For information, call 228-239-1235 or 228-872-2030 and  leave a message. You will be contacted as soon as possible. South Coast Paddling is open year round so why not schedule your one-of-a kind Gulf Coast adventure right now!
