AJ’s Donuts

The world has had a love affair with pastry for hundreds of years and no place more so than in the Deep South. Specifically, Americans love that holed, sweet, glazed wonder known as the doughnut. Whether you prefer yours glazed or filled, sprinkled with color or covered in chocolate, AJ’s Donuts has the tasty treat you crave.
This Mardi Gras there is only one place to go for that ever special southern tradition we know as the King Cake. Opened in 2007, AJ’s Donuts offers pastries and King Cakes to fit anyone with a sweet tooth. Brandy Waltman was tired of the corporate world and decided to go with what her family knew best. Donuts. Brandy’s dad and grandfather both operated pastry shops in Missouri for many years. It just seemed natural that Brandy, and her husband Chris, should join in on the family-type business. They didn’t have to ponder the name for very long. Their daughter Amber Jada was a tiny wonder with a big, beautiful smile that could light up a room. Amber Jada is a fixture at the store as much as the lively décor and heavenly smells that waft through the morning air. AJ loves to engage the clients. Don’t be surprised if this wonderfully precocious 5 year old bounces up and joins you for a bear claw and a cup of milk while you sit in the colorful dining room!
Within the first 30 minutes of our visit to AJ’s, we noticed some things that were amazing. One out of two people that walked in asked for an Apple Fritter. Word has it that they are the best on the coast and probably in the state. Another thing that caught our attention was that Brandy seemed to know every single client that walked through the door, what they liked on the menu and something about them personally! Now that is what we call service with a smile!
The hours are grueling for a man who makes doughnuts and pastries. Chris Waltman arrives at the store at 2:30 a.m. to make sure that the store is filled with all the best that AJ’s has to offer. Using the recipes that Brandy’s father and grandfather developed years ago, Chris carefully kneads, rolls and glazes his way toward the sunrise. Brandy is there when the doors open, often to a line waiting to get the first taste of fresh coffee and the soft, sweetness of cinnamon rolls and cake doughnuts before they head to work. The Waltman’s have had a wonderfully responsible young lady join their team recently. You will find Courtney Swackhamer behind the counter when the pace is quickened by the crowds. This is the first hire for the Waltmans and they are very pleased with the way Courtney takes so much pride in her work.
By the time the shop closes at 1 p.m., Brandy and Chris are already making plans for the next day. They take orders for pick up every day and during Mardi Gras there are always King Cakes to build high with fillings and boxes of pastries to get ready for parties. The couple likes at least 24 hours notice on all orders and they will even ship your goodies for you. Try the Apple Fritter, Party Platter or mix it up with Bread Pudding and Apple Fritter Cheesecake. Everything is homemade and fresh every day. The folks at AJ’s love to do special orders and are becoming known for their “giveaways” on their Face book page. Call AJ’s to place your order @ 228-392-2162 or go to their website at http://www.ajsdonuts.com. The store is open Wednesday thru Monday from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is closed on Tuesday. You can find AJ’s at 11516 Lamey Bridge Road Suite H in d’Iberville just a few doors down from the Sports Shack and Which Wich.
