Outside of Ireland, where can you find Shamrock Chops, O’Horsy Burgers, $2 well drinks and $3 pints of draught beer? The Gulf Coast has many restaurants and clubs but Irish Coast Pub is a different kind of place to relax. Located in the heart of downtown Gulfport, Irish Coast is in the spot that used to house Watson’s Piano Bar. The new owners have opened up the once low lit venue and now it is bright and sunny, warm and welcoming.
Ben and Kathy Kaufman have transformed the pub into a true Irish experience with “kvetch and catch” covering the walls. Kathy says that she wants it to be so authentic looking that you think you’re in merry ole Ireland. “All the true Irish pubs have so much on the walls that you can’t see the paint! We even made it sort of a game for our customers. If someone brings in something we think is appropriate to hang and display then they get a free draft beer!” Kathy said.
Ben and Kathy also provided the recipes for the wonderful menu. The Eggplant Fries with garlic mayonnaise sauce are such a refreshing change from the ordinary. Guests love the daily specials and the thin pastrami used for the P.B.L.T. will make your mouth water. Lunch is from 11 until 2 Monday-Friday and then the pub kicks into high gear until around 2 a.m. Food is served until closing with a special dinner menu nightly.
When we say that the food is fresh…how bout this! The French fries are never cut until the waiter or waitress sends the order to the kitchen and the burgers are hand formed for each order. The Kaufman’s also book the pub out for special events and will cater to your location. Kids are welcome to eat with mom and dad until 9 p.m.
Live music is on tap 4 or 5 nights a week and the couple plans to have big excitement going on for the upcoming football season. The pub opens at 4 p.m. on Saturdays but is closed on Sundays.
This is a non-corporate, family-owned business and the owners like it that way. “We want to get to know each of our customers. We would like this to be their place to relax, meet friends and have a place to come and just be themselves. I want to make friends that will last a lifetime! We are simply a laid back, neighborhood pub with great food.” Ben said.
The pub has an extensive list of beers (more than 50), call liquors and great Irish whiskeys. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 5-7 p.m. where, along with other specials, you can get wine by the glass at a special price. Sorry smokers but Irish Coast Pub doesn’t allow smoking inside. Power hour is from midnight to 1 a.m. where guests can get $2 Bud Light, $2 wells and $2 shots!
There is NEVER a cover charge at Irish Coast but there are some great bands on tap for the rest of the summer. Connect with the pub on Facebook or drop by and meet the owners. You can also call 228-867-7022 to order some fine takeout food and size the place up when you go to pick up your order. And if you’re there on Tuesday around 9 o’clock, hop on stage and sing a little Karaoke in your best Irish brogue. Just have fun and relax at one of the coasts coolest places to hang!
