7th Annual D’Iberville BBQ Throwdown & Festival

the-mantuary-smoked-spare-ribsCalling all lovers of barbeque and fun! The 7th Annual D’Iberville BBQ Throwdown & Festival will be held February 23rd at the D’Iberville Town Green from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Whether your personal preference is dry rubbed or sassy and saucy, this ‘Free to the Public’ event will feature ribs, brisket and chicken that promise to be some of the best in the country.
This intense competition is sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association and offers $5000 in cash and prizes. This is the ONLY I.B.C.A. State Championship Certified Cook-off in the entire state of Mississippi. Terry Welch with Barbeque World magazine will be there to cheer all the teams on. The trophy for first place is huge and the bragging rights are even bigger. Barbeque teams will compete in three divisions; Ribs, chicken and brisket. There is also a kids “Piglet Division”.
If you think that this competition is just for the masters, think again. Anyone can compete! In this throw down, the professionals can be beaten by a back yard griller who has just the right flavor combination and skill. Competitors will turn in 7 pieces of meat in each division and the judges will announce the winners during the awards ceremony later in the day.
“This is more of a huge tailgate party,” said Mike Mullins, Public Works and Facilities Director for the City of D’Iberville. “When the first BBQ competition took place back in June of 2006 we had d’Vine Soul Food from Biloxi and Roy McManus from New Orleans & Picayune jump on board as two of our first competitors. The teams deliver a fierce battle every year to see who has the best barbeque.”
Festival goers will be able to wander from food truck to food truck and purchase entrees and side dishes from some of the finest chefs around. The grounds will hold very nice carnival rides for the kids, tons of arts and crafts vendors and even a car show. Vendors are not duplicated so it’s something new everywhere you turn! Music will be offered to keep the mood light and watch for the colorful clowns.
The Harley Davidson shop on Cedar Lake Road will be represented and loads of motorcycles will be on hand for visitors to view. Anyone with a sweet ride on two or four wheels is welcome to come show off their beautiful style.
The festival is co-sponsored by the City of D’Iberville and the Gateway Group. Budweiser and Winn Dixie are major sponsors of the event. Applications for entry into the completion are still being accepted.
The D’Iberville BBQ Throwdown has received huge accolades and was named the Top 20 Winter Event for 2012 in the Southeast Region of the U.S. by the Southeast Tourism Society. The Gateway Group won the Mary Buchannan Award in 2012 that recognizes volunteerism for service dedicated to the community.
