Start the Summer Happy and Well!

dwbhm_banner_2013In last month’s edition of Go To Places, you heard about Mississippi’s journey toward more mental health and wellness for its citizens. Good news! June is the perfect time to get started on your own plan to stay happy and well! What better time than the beginning of summer to not only learn some new ways to reduce stress and help your family stay strong, but also have an evening of good-hearted fun.
On June 5th, the Mental Health Association of South Mississippi (MHASM) will be having their annual “Don’t Worry Be Happy, Mon!” Bachelor & Bachelorette Showcase. The event will be at IP Casino Resort Spa in Studio B starting at 6pm. The highlight of the evening is local bachelors and bachelorettes on stage auctioning off amazing gift packages to the highest bidder. This is not a singles event, it is the opportunity to showcase fabulous people who care about awareness of mental health issues.
Each year MHASM provides services to people experiencing mental health issues in our community at no charge. Programs include a day center for adults who have mental illness, peer support services, homeless outreach to individuals with mental illness, and a supportive housing program for people who have been homeless and live with mental illness. MHASM also offers community wellness programs that are available to the general public, such as the internationally acclaimed Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) workshops, and Mental Health First Aid for people who work with the public, such as teachers, first responders, and business people.

The following week, on June 10th and 11th, the Interfaith Partnerships will be holding the 2014 Community Wellness Conference at the Biloxi Civic Center. Over the past eight years the conference has sought to bring together primary and mental health care professionals from across the MS Gulf Coast to broaden their networks, update their skills, explore new strategies, and earn continuing education credits. This year promises to be another exciting opportunity to learn new information and enhance your skills. The conference is also great for anyone who wants to have a deeper understanding of mental health issues.
This year’s theme is “Integrating Mental, Behavioral, Physical and Spiritual Health.” The two day event features speakers and breakout sessions by primary and mental health care professionals; nutritional and fitness professionals, as well as a range of topics to promote community wellness projects. This year’s opening guest speaker will be former Major League Baseball catcher, Barry Lyons. Barry, a Biloxi native, will share an inspirational message of hope and recovery with conference attendees. His talk will be a great start to an inspirational and informative two day conference.
Topics and workshops offered this year include Social Work Ethics in the Social Media Age, Motivational Interviewing, the 5 Stages of Recovery, How to Work with Dreams, and much more. And be sure to visit the Virtual Dementia Tour – a unique learning experience for anyone who may have a friend or loved one who may be experiencing the disorder.
