2014 Katrina Memorial Regatta At the Ocean Spring Yacht Club

1150168_425008187607998_1765857831_nThis year’s Katrina Memorial Regatta at the Ocean Springs Yacht Club, on August 30th, promises to be a day of fun, family entertainment that everyone can be involved in. All coast residents and visitors are invited to join in the races with no fee required.
Fleet Captain, Joe Pocreva, says that the winners in each division will receive bragging rights for the year and a championship photo. You can enter your dinghy, laser, sunfish, Hobie waves and the like into races that will be judged throughout the day. The first race will begin around 10:30 a.m. and wrap up by 5 p.m. so all those in attendance can enjoy themselves at the yacht club. The dinner menu is not highly expensive and the food is very good.
“We expect about 20 boats to come out for the event and I’m sure that competition will be exciting for both the participants and the spectators,” Pocreva said.
There will be buoy races, short, medium and long courses. No matter what kind of boat you have the fine folks at the OSYC will set up a course for you based on tides, wind and other sailing factors.
These races are not just for adults. Kids are welcome to enter too! If your boat is 20’ or under, you can qualify for at least one of the days competitions.
Special events are always being planned at the OSYC and they hold at least 6 regattas each year with their largest being on Memorial Day weekend. The “Slip-to-Ship” regatta gives Memorial Day participants a chance to race from the yacht club to Ship Island, enjoy lunch on the beautiful beach there and then race back for an evening of fun in the cozy club surroundings.
During the Katrina Memorial Regatta, representatives of the OSYC will be on hand to discuss membership benefits, take applications and answer any questions you may have about joining the yacht club as a member.
If you’re thinking of joining the OSYC, part of the amenities on hand include a private pool, a family oriented club house for members only and the use of sailing vessels on site.
