Downtown Gulfport has a new reason to shine. High Maintenance Hair Salon is a welcome addition to the area, located at 1625 25th Avenue. The beautiful property is steeped in history. Built in the 1940’s, it was actually the first fire department in the city of Gulfport! Owner, Jean Gillan, is thrilled to be a part of the revitalization of downtown. “I love the New Orleans style of my building with the huge open floor plan, exposed beams and original brick, it is exactly what I always imagined my salon would look like,” she said.
Jean and her husband did a lot of the finishing work themselves, putting the perfect, personal touches throughout the salon. Several doors were salvaged from an old plantation house in the Big Easy, as well as wood that is said to be 500 years old. Custom made desks for the staff were created with this incredible find. The individual beauty stations are made of re purposed pallets that have been hand stained for a rustic, old world charm. “Everything in my salon, including the reception area tables, coffee station, and shelving was designed and created by myself and my team,” Jean said. Even Jean’s daughter helped refurbish the doors.
The High Maintenance family is a close knit group who really love each other and love what they do.
